1. Are you an Essential Worker?
Yes, technically. As a secondary school teacher, we have a duty of care to the children of key workers and those that are vulnerable. Pragmatically, because they're of secondary school age, we only have two children showing up I believe. So we only need two or three members in every day, and I haven't been put on the rota yet - first time next week I believe. @aardnebby.lj is also considered to be a Key Worker, so we've all stayed home for now, and managed to juggle schedules, but the children will probably be going to the child minder's next Friday.
2. How many drinks have you had since the quarantine has started?
A few more than usual? Mostly because when school is in session, I rarely drink in the evenings during the week because I have work to do after dinner. But I've made the effort of not working much in the evening, so have had a few ciders and gins and tonics with @aardnebby.lj . None of it medicinal, mostly as a nice change.
3. If you have kids... Are they driving you nuts?
They're being pretty impressive so far. @aardnebby.lj and I seem to have managed to find a reasonable balance of time for work and time without. Making sure we have activities and ideas of games to play seems to be a good idea. We're also trying to make sure we build in time for each of them, and they seem to understand the need to stay at home. They miss extended family, and it's a discussion we've had to have with C a few times, making plans for post-confinement.
4. What new hobby have you taken up during this?
Not new hobbies, but old hobbies refreshed. Daily violin practice, daily exercise, knitting and colouring. Much more cooking and baking too.
5. How many grocery runs have you done?
One a week or so. Our coop has been fantastic in terms of stock and accessibility. Might need to make a run to the Italian store soon, but that's more desire than need, so holding off until next week I think.
6. What are you spending your stimulus check on?
Not in the US - both of us are still getting paid. Going to keep on paying childminders as usual, and any money saved is going to go as donations to the arts associations and cultural endeavours we've made use of.
7. Do you have any special occasions that you will miss during this quarantine?
I suppose it depends on how long it'll last. So far, the main change has been my parents being unable to come and visit this week. There is the possibility that we'll end up missing a few birthdays in the next few weeks, and both weddings we were supposed to attend this year have been postponed.
8. Are you keeping your housework done?
We seem to be going through less laundry (maybe because not getting as messy or wearing work clothes?), and the rest of the housework is mostly the same... a bit more sweeping but other than that I'm not too fussed if it's slightly messier than usual.
9. What movie have you watched during this quarantine?
Both Fantastic Beasts, Into the Spidey-verse and started watching The Mandallorian. Have also watched a few plays streamed by the National Theatre (Coriolanus, and Jane Eyre).
10. What are you streaming with?
Prime, Spotify and MetOpera nightly streams. A bit of Youtube too.
11. 9 months from now is there any chance of you having a baby?
I highly doubt it. The copper coil only has been in for two years and is meant to last much longer. That said we are not using any additional means of protection, so I suppose it's a non-zero risk.
12. What's your go-to quarantine meal?
Whatever's on the meal plan. It depends on what the veg box contained, how much energy I have, and who's making the meal. And what recipes C's been watching recently!
13. Is this whole situation making you paranoid?
I don't think so. I started reading @siderea's posts back in December and had quite a few conversations with @aardnebby.lj about them. We followed most of the preparation guidelines that had been laid out, which meant we then managed to mostly avoid the upcoming panic buying. It's also hard to qualify it as paranoia since the virus doesn't have any agency.
14. Has your internet gone out on you during this time?
No, thank goodness, because it would make @aardnebby.lj's work from home rather tricky.
15. What month do you predict this all ends?
For a particular country or worldwide? Worldwide it's going to go on until at least the autumn I think. UK wise they're going to try and re-open too soon, and we'll be even more screwed than we are now.
16. First thing you're gonna do when you get off quarantine?
Depends on whether we're talking about locally or internationally. Internationally, go see my family in France. Hugs my parents and siblings and niblings. Nationally/locally, take a whole afternoon to myself with a book or with a friend without being interrupted by work or children. Take the children on a walk to one of the National Trust places. See @aardnebby.lj's relatives.
17. Where do you wish you were right now?
I'm happy where I am right now: the house is big enough we are not stressed out about space, the garden is lovely, we live near green space. Ideally, in a house system where I would be able to see my family too, and my friends, and and and :)
18. What free-from-quarantine activity are you missing the most?
Work and seeing colleagues/friends/students. The ability to plan things in the future with a certain degree of visibility.
19. Have you run out of toilet paper and hand sanitizer?
No. We had our usual supply of soap and toilet paper, and have enough still.
20. Do you have enough food to last a month?
Probably. Not with the usual variety that we are used to, and we'd probably run out of vegetables and fruit and dairy after two or three weeks, but we would have something to eat for the next four weeks, even if it was just oats and water. Mostly because the coop sell them in bags of 5 kgs. We also have tins in the shed, and I'm trying not to touch those for now. We'll see how things go.
